INAF - Astronomical Observatory of Padova

INAF - Astronomical Observatory of Padova is one of the main structures of the National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF). The main activity of the Observatory is to perform scientific research in various  fields of Astrophysics. The Observatory also contributes to  advanced education, assists in the dissemination of knowledge and implements project of education and outreach of Astronomy.

The Formation of Quiescent Galaxies

 ABSTRACT

Why do massive galaxies in the early universe stop forming new stars and become quiescent? The nature of this quenching process is one of the most important missing pieces in the puzzle of galaxy formation. A number of physical mechanisms have been proposed, but observational evidence is still lacking. One way to constrain the quenching mechanism is to study the physical properties of high-redshift quiescent galaxies. Using deep near-infrared spectroscopy from Keck and VLT, I have explored the stellar ages, stellar kinematics, and ionized gas properties of quiescent galaxies at 1 < z < 2.5. I will present recent results from these studies and discuss their implications for quenching.
