The Host Galaxies of Merging Compact Objects Across Cosmic Time

Abstract

In the new era of gravitational wave (GW) astronomy, one of the fundamental questions for the electromagnetic counterpart follow-up is what are the properties of the most likely host galaxies of merging compact objects.  In this talk, I will discuss a novel method to investigate the properties of the host galaxies of binary compact objects, by combining galaxy catalogs from hydrodynamical simulations together with population synthesis models. I will show that there is a strong correlation between the stellar mass of the host galaxy and the merger rate per galaxy. Also, the star formation rate and the gas metallicity of the galaxies show similar correlations but weaker. Our results also show that early-type galaxies host the majority of merging compact objects at low redshift. Finally, I will discuss the future perspectives and the ways to use our results for low-latency searches of GW sources.
